How much does a laptop's speed differ in a decade?
It's hard to find direct comparisons, but we're going to jump halfway down the rabbit hole and compare processors,
The processors we are comparing are Intel's 3rd generation i7 which was launched in 2012 and Intel's 12th generation i5 which was launched in 2022.
We use PassMark Software, their website has results for over 1,000,000 systems covering more than 3,500 different types of processors.
We compare some tests and what they mean in everyday use,
Data encryption,
Encrypting a 10 MB PDF file would take about 5 seconds with the older processor and around a second with the new processor.
If you want to compress the same pdf file into a zip file, it takes about 100 milliseconds with the old processor and about 60 milliseconds with the new one.
So how much does the speed actually differ over a decade?
The vast majority of people who do everyday computing work will be fine with the older processor. It supports all kinds of cloud-based services like productivity software and online meeting services.
The fact that there are operating systems that limit the type of CPU that can be used and supported accelerates the transition to open source operating systems that better support older hardware.
Several major PC manufacturers are now delivering open source operating systems to new computers of selected models and we hope that this will make more people see the benefits even on older computers, which can thus be used for longer.
Could you imagine using a 10-year-old computer with open source code?
What is your limit for how old a computer you can afford to use?
