Products are often produced for a limited time, especially when it comes to information and communication technology ( #ICT ).
When launching new models, manufacturers sometimes add new features to increase or broaden their customer segment. Sometimes it's just a matter of convincing the consumer from product awareness to product conviction through good marketing.
This technology shift is called end of life (EOL), which in practice means that the manufacturer stops producing, marketing and withdraws the product from the market.
Price reductions, discounted and often time-limited prices on newly launched models therefore make us switch to the new ones.
End of service / end of support (EOS) is another term you should be aware of that comes after EOL where the product is completely or partially no longer supported with software and/or maintained and the manufacturer no longer performs warranty service measures.
MTBF = Mean Time Between Failures is an average number used to describe when a product should theoretically become defective, stop working or may need to be repaired.
For example, if you take a network switch or a hard drive, an MTBF can be anywhere between 100,000 - 1,000,000 hours or around 11 - 114 years depending on the brand and model.
Therefore, if you want to expand, #repair , or #upgrade your IT park by purchasing devices that can be used for as long as possible, you can look for EOL and EOS dates and use MTBF to get a sense of how long the product is sold, supported, and expected to be in operation.
